FUJIFILM GFX 100: Four world firsts.* One awesome camera.

There are a huge number of reasons why the FUJIFILM GFX 100 is so exciting for photographers around the world. This mirrorless 55mm large format camera features a 102 megapixel CMOS sensor, superfast X-Processor 4 quad-core CPU and a 3.2-inch three-way flip-out LCD touchscreen, all packed into a portable, weather-resistant, magnesium alloy body.

This alone is enough to make any photographer go weak at the knees, but remarkably, the list of features doesn’t end there. In fact, it gets even more impressive.

Cameras that top 100 megapixels don’t have a reputation for their flexibility. They can often be bulky, hard to transport, lacking in certain functionality and extremely unforgiving when used handheld. This has meant these photographic powerhouses are often confined to the studio, unable to realise their true potential in the outside world.

With the GFX 100, Fujifilm wanted to change all this by unleashing the power of large format. In keeping with its long-standing reputation for bucking trends and pushing boundaries, Fujifilm developed ground-breaking technology to pack no less than four world firsts* into the GFX 100, marking the beginning of a new era for large format photography.

Take a closer look below:

1. World’s First* 102MP Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) Sensor in a Mirrorless Camera

The GFX 100 features a newly developed BSI 102-megapixel imaging sensor. With this structure bringing the exposure plane closer to the colour filter array, noise levels are reduced, native ISO is extended to 100, and sharpness is increased without an optical low-pass filter.

This extremely efficient new sensor is paired up with the powerful X-Processor 4 processing engine to deliver 16-bit images with amazing colour fidelity, rich shadow detail, and incredible dynamic range. The results have to be seen to be believed.

2. World’s First* In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) for a Sensor with a Diagonal of 55mm

Such high resolution leaves very little room for error when it comes to camera shake and this can make handheld photography difficult without the right light. The GFX 100 is the first camera to include IBIS on a sensor larger than 35mm, which opens up a whole new world of opportunities for on-location and low-light shoots.

This impressive new technology comprises a three-axis accelerometer, three-axis gyro sensor, and a dedicated dual processor. Such a combination enables the system to work across five axes, making 10,000 corrections per second and offering up to 5.5 stops** of image stabilization. The GFX 100’s revolutionary IBIS offers a level of versatility never before seen for a sensor of this size.

3. World’s First* On-Board Hybrid Phase Detection AF with Approximately 100% Coverage on a Sensor with a Diagonal of 55mm

The GFX 100 continues to push boundaries with the inclusion of onboard hybrid phase detection AF across the entire sensor. This provides photographers with approximately 100% coverage, making it easier to find perfect focus wherever the subject appears in the frame.

With the capability of the X-Processor 4 at its heart, the GFX 100’s AF system not only offers extremely fast and accurate focusing, it provides highly efficient subject tracking and Face/Eye Detection to give both photographers and videographers peace of mind in challenging light.

4. World’s First* Mirrorless Digital Camera with a Sensor Diagonal of 55mm to Offer Full Sensor Width Video up to 4K/30p

Large format digital cinema is quickly gaining popularity, however, there are few viable options available for filmmakers looking to achieve visual impact without using a big sensor. With its medium format CMOS sensor measuring 43.8×32.9mm, the GFX 100 is the perfect alternative.

For the first time,* it is possible for videographers to capture spectacular large format footage in all the glory of 4K. There are also 16 of Fujifilm’s renowned Film Simulations to choose from, which cater for a wide range of cinematic looks. For those who want more control in post-production, the GFX 100 also records in F-Log, outputting 4:2:2 10-bit uncompressed footage via its HDMI port. This allows cinematographers plenty of freedom to edit.
