#SOOC: Reiko Hagihara x X-S10

Reiko Hagihara

Born in Nanjo City, Okinawa Prefecture. During her school days, she wandered around the world alone with a camera in hand. She was fascinated by Japanese landscape photography. After three years of training in photography at Ishinoyu Lodge in Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture, she became independent. She studied under landscape photographers such as Toshitaka Nakanishi, Shiro Hagiwara and Toshiya Hagiwara.
Currently, with the theme of “Heart of Nature”, she is working mainly in Shiga Kogen, Tsumagoi, and Okinawa. She also conducts photography and photography classes, and writes. She continues to pursue the expression that “people are part of nature”.

X-S10 Impression

The X-S10 is the camera that represents my emotions, and you can’t lie to the X-S10. Even if you try to patch it up, your emotions are exposed. Not many cameras can do that. It not only captures the natural colors and light as you see them, but it also captures the emotions you feel. When I realized this, I made up my mind to express my emotions with all my might.

Perhaps the reason for capturing the movement of the mind is because of the benefit of “color”. It perfectly captures the air you feel and the image in your mind. “When you take a shot of a subject that strikes a chord with you, you find that it doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned. I’m sure many of us have had this experience, but I was surprised to find that the rich color palette of the film simulation solved this problem.

My favorite was the “Classic Neg.,” and the colors look like something out of a memory.

The three-dimensionality of the image is outstanding, and the image has a strong centripetal force on the subject in focus. The expression is like a “memory”; only the strongest impressions stand out in the dim colors. The images were shocking to me, as if I had encountered “a landscape” that had been sleeping inside me.

I also love the PROVIA and Velvia for their ability to capture natural landscapes and beautiful colors. Those color are even difficult for myself to reproduce from RAW but Fujifilm’s Film Simulation can make it happen easily. This is a camera that makes me want to actively take out JPGs.

There are emotions that can be brought out in the photographic process by watching the color of the Film Simulation on the monitor. It will surely speak for the subtleties of your heart that you have been unable to express until now.

The enthusiasm and tension that only JPG, or Strait Out of Camera, can bring to completion on site is also very comfortable. Check the images while shooting and enhance your imagination on the spot. I can improve my work and myself while shooting.

The small, lightweight body is not obscured by the presence of equipment, but can be treated as a part of your body. Its small body and unobtrusive design make it a pleasure to be with. Whether it’s a quick walk around the house or a work meeting, there’s always plenty of subjects to come across when I carry it around. “It’s a camera you can carry with you on a daily basis,” and because it’s not overbearing, it’s able to scoop up the subjects you find and the subtleties of your heart.

To me, the great outdoors and around the house are equal fields. The brilliance of nature’s life is all around us. I don’t miss the everyday treasures that are often overlooked.

The lens of choice for everyday use is the XC series, which specializes in lightweight compacts and is a comfortable choice.

It’s surprisingly light and works well with the X-S10, and it’s able to pick up beauty very nimbly while retaining the typical Fujifilm colors and descriptive power.

When you head into serious shooting, you’ll be taking on the XF8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR, XF16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR, XF50-140mm F2.8 LM OIS WR and XF80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lenses for expressive power. With a wide range of lenses available, you can choose the lens that best suits your shooting style and customize your own style.

I appreciate the reasonable pricing of the APS-C format, and it makes me want to enjoy changing lenses. It will stimulate your curiosity and expand your horizons to try out lenses that you normally wouldn’t reach for.

The X-S10’s greatly improved design allows for more intuitive operation. The inclusion of the mode dial, which has become a common feature on digital cameras, makes the design more familiar to many people.

It was designed to be “easier to understand,” and will be easy to use even for first-time users. On the mode dial, several custom modes can be set, and I registered a fast shutter speed and continuous shooting mode to capture animals that appear out of nowhere when shooting landscapes. Thanks to this, I was able to make quick changes.

I’ll be shooting subjects from low angles often, just above the ground, but I can take a good look at the monitor and take my time while shooting, without compromising the composition. I’m very happy with the evolution of vertical composition as well, as it enhances the level of perfection. There are many exciting discoveries to be made from different angles, such as shooting from a high or low position, or having the camera burrow into a narrow space such as a grass field. Be bold and enjoy the freedom of handheld photography.

After meeting the X-S10, I have definitely changed. What do I want to feel and what do I want to express? I was able to find an inner feeling that I never knew existed and express it in my photographs. I’m sure I was able to meet a new person. This is the joy of life that the camera gives us and the endless journey that X-S10 leads us on, to a new me, to a new world.
