SEEING, FEELING AND PHOTOGRAPHING
Photography has long since crossed into my life to make it fuller and happier. I use my camera as a tool that connects me to my environment and allows me to enjoy its vitality.
The world is still a magical stage for me and the camera has become my inseparable companion, with it I narrate my sensations of the place in the same way as a writer would do with his diary. Life is a succession of images and some are so seductive and intimate that you want to freeze that special instant, making imperishable what is essentially temporary.
My name is Katy Gómez, I am a veterinarian by profession, a photographer by passion and a traveller without limits by conviction. I am passionate about telling stories and harnessing the narrative power of photography to express my feelings of place, while enjoying the pleasure of Seeing, Feeling and Photographing. When words elude us or prove imprecise, our photographs become the most universal and richly nuanced language to speak of emotions.
There are cameras that you fall in love with at first sight because of their aesthetics, their ergonomics, their retro touch and their functionality. That’s what happened with my first Fujifilm X-E2, and since then the X series has been with me as an essential storytelling tool. With the new XT5 the complicity was inevitable from the start.
When Fujifilm asked me to test the X-T5 model, I chose several locations in the province of Jaén, in Úbeda, Baeza, Jaén, the Sierra de Andújar and the Sierra de Segura, to experience the sensations of this first contact and the versatility of the camera to adapt to my workflow and to the different themes and environments required by the type of photography I do.
As a travel and reportage photographer, I’m looking for compact equipment that allows me to carry as little weight as possible. I need speed, discretion and to blend in with my surroundings so the first pleasant surprise when you hold the Fujifilm X-T5 in your hands is that it’s a lightweight camera, retaining the retro aesthetics I love and weighing slightly less than its predecessor. My hand feels comfortable caressing the X-T5.
This camera incorporates the new 5th generation sensor and 40 megapixels, giving it an impressive image quality that more than meets my needs. A technological leap that puts it on a par with other high-end cameras. Cropping without loss of quality and large prints will no longer be a problem. My doubts were focused on the camera’s behaviour in terms of noise generation in low light and the result has been excellent.
The dials and button layout follow the same design as the previous models. Their ease of set-up and simplicity of operation allow me to quickly adapt them to a particular scene. It is an intuitive and easy to use camera that becomes an extension of my gaze.
A stabilised body and excellent performance at high ISO allows me to shoot at slow speeds without blurred pictures. In low ambient light or indoor situations I can shoot handheld at ¼ of a second, giving me freedom of movement in tune with the flow of the moment and the spontaneity of the shot.
Although in my workflow I shoot in RAW, I must admit that the chroma and dynamic range in the JPEGs straight from the camera are superb, with that Fujifilm look that I like so much.
I was pleasantly surprised by the superb autofocus with tracking and the accuracy of the autofocus. Face detection and focusing on the eye, even in low light conditions, are very accurate. For portrait lovers, this functional improvement will allow us to forget about focusing and concentrate on the power of the eyes and their expressiveness to trigger the shutter at the right moment.
I am fascinated by photography because it is the only means of expression that fixes forever a precise and fleeting instant. In fractions of a second we have to translate in a click what your mind thinks and your heart feels. The X-T5, with its fast shutter speed, allows me to practice reactive photography, so that I don’t miss the elusive decisive instant.
My overall impression of the Fujifilm X-T5 is that I have in my hands a camera that is ideal for the type of photography I do because it more than meets my needs. In this camera I have found the desired balance between quality, ergonomics and versatility, and it fits my budget.
The world is a cliché that has been portrayed a thousand times, our challenge as photographers is to find the most harmonious and expressive interplay between light, composition and time. To subvert reality to transform it into an aesthetic experience that caresses, surprises or strikes your senses.
Who wants reality, when you can have magic,,,,?
