Rémi Flament (France)

Originally from Haute-Loire, France, I have always shown a desire to discover and explore the world. My independence, my entrepreneurial spirit and my ability to adapt have led me to work in a wide variety of sectors well beyond European borders.

I have lived with images and my adventures since 2015. I have never followed paths, and I have always sought to invent them. My pass? My camera. With him, I roam the sometimes still virgin space of the basements of our planet. Underground a world has never been photographed before and there is still land to be discovered…

The recognition that is granted to me for my artistic work of illustrations of underground landscapes, makes me intervene, today, in ultra-specialized industrial reports. My technical skills as a caver and rope access technician allow me to report in all environments, even the most confidential.

Underground photography cannot be limited to a few technical adjustments because underground images do not exist! The light is absent. Absolute black reigns. From then on the photographer becomes a creator because he brings and decides on the light. The image is thought, imagined, felt. It is built step by step to become a story that can be told …

Exploring, discovering and photographing the underground treasures of our planet require knowledges of the environment in order to be able to apprehend and prepare the future expedition. The challenge is daunting : imagine what does not yet exist ; so exciting. Once plunged into the eternal night, cut off from all communication and of immediate help from outside, we can only count on ourselves. The progression is technical, often aerial, sometimes laborious. The team of the day, united around the photographic project, has more than one trick up its sleeve to confront obstacles. Perforator, ropes, attachment point, metal material of all kinds, carefully distributed in resistant bags.

Particular attention is dedicated to the photographic material transported in waterproof and padded suitcases. It is made up of a pair of camera and an ultra wide angle lens essential for working in a confined environment. The absence of light offers total freedom in the creation and composition of the image and requires the use of several electronic or old magnesic flashes, distributed in space and controlled by radio control. A small telephoto lens is always appreciable and perfect the panoply of the cavephotographer.

I discovered the Fujifilm cameras with the X-M1 and X-T10. Conquered by the X-T2, I now feel a perfect aboutissement in the conception of the X-T3 offered by Fujifilm. The XF8-16mm lens never leaves me. They both became true adventure companions. In 2020, I acquired a GFX100 to meet the needs of professionals with a set of GF optics. A camera, with a crazy resolution to see the adventure in a big way.
