In late 2016 I was given the opportunity to try the then new Fujifilm X-T2 and the X-Pro2 as well as several lenses.
There’s that often repeated saying that, “it’s not the camera but who’s behind the camera”. In this instance, like a good marriage, some things can’t happen without being in a good relationship. I’d like to think I have this sort of relationship with the Fuji cameras and lenses that I use.
I use Fujifilm X Series cameras mainly for my personal work, this mainly for my social documentary and street photography. I’m one of those photographers who have been around awhile, meaning to say, I started my adventure in photography in the days of film. At that time I was using Leica M series cameras to shoot much of my personal work. Fast forward to the present and we now certainly live in interesting times. In terms of photography equipment and associated technologies, we have choices the likes of which we have never had before. Added to all this, the age of digital photography is still young and something that is continually evolving – if not on the camera and lens front, then in terms of digital preparation. Then, if not there, then in terms of digital storage and backup. Of course, the biggest developments have been in the areas of presenting, showing one’s work, this across the many social media platforms, and websites. Then, there’s the wealth of publishing and printing opportunities not to mention competitions and other interesting opportunities to get one’s work out there.
Coming back to Fujifilm’s cameras and lenses, the digital age and “perfect marriages”. The equipment I use gives me the results I’m looking for. In choosing Fuji, this was a deliberate choice. I wanted a system with which I could work and grow. At the time, speaking here of mirrorless cameras, Fuji was more or less the “new kid” on the block. But, Fuji was doings in new and interesting, if not to say, innovative ways. The one innovation that grabbed my attention was the X-Tran sensor.
In doing what I do on the streets, with the Fuji gear I use. I can get the shots I want time and again. I have my ways, I have my methods. I rarely if ever communicate with my subjects. There is no need. There’s no need for me to intrude any further into any given situation that I may be shooting. The thing I love about Fuji is that I can shoot any way I choose – eyelevel, from the hip, extended out in front of me. All this depends on the moment.
These days when it comes to lenses, Fujifilm XF zoom lenses are my lenses of choice – specifically the XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR and the XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS lenses. I can’t live (or work) without either of these lenses. I have tried other lenses – fixed focal length primes and other zoom lenses. But the consistent choices are these two lenses. Why? They allow me to “reach” into a situation without me ever imposing or intruding into that situation. The quality is such that there is little that I am left to question when it comes to choosing either of these two lenses. I am a particularly pleased if not proud of the work I have done with my Fuji gear and what I have managed to accomplish in this regard.
