#SOOC: Glenn Prasetya x X-S10

Glenn Prasetya

A perfectionist Visual Artist, his attention to details has made him a trusted option for numerous fashion and beauty brands, local as well as international. Working with respected names within the industry such as Christophe Gaillet, Jacques Uzzardi and Hyun Tae on regional print campaigns as well as editorial projects for international fashion titles are what his portfolio is made of. Naturally, these achievements are well acknowledged through a series of awards such as the 2011 Elle Style Award: Photographer of the Year and he has also been selected to represent Indonesia as the L’Oreal Paris Indonesia Official Photographer at Cannes Film Festival 2013.

Accepting the challenge from FUJIFILM to use their new camera has been an interesting project for me. I’m a Fashion Photographer and has been in the industry for 14 years, and for all those times I rarely shoot with FUJIFILM, so of course this ‘Straight Out of Camera’ Project is new and very challenging for me as a new FUJIFILM user. Can you imagine shooting RAW and make sure we capture the best without editing? As I always shoot in the commercial photography industry that works a lot with the post-pro and editing process, this is interesting, right?

For me, Photography should deliver something. There should be a message captured in an image. The picture should be able to speak by itself, this is how I always start my work of photography by creating the idea. Sketching the concept of the photo shoot from ideas and references, many discussions with styling, makeup, and hair division is a must. Execution is also important, choosing the right models to represent the idea, and last is equipment and gear. In this ‘Straight Out of Camera’ Project I’m using FUJIFILM’s newest camera, FUJIFILM X-S10. I must say it’s an APS-C sensor camera that delivers a great result in their RAF and JPEG image.

My first Impression of this FUJIFILM X-S10 brings back my memory of once I started photography using an analog camera. It looks classic and in a compact size with Dial Buttons just like an analog camera. I operate the aperture, shutter speed using the dials button, which makes me feel like operating a real camera, not just a computer. The In-Body Image Stabilization and the Optical Image Stabilization helps us a lot during the photoshoot, especially I’m shooting with continuous light this time to capture the ambiance and make it looks cinematic. The Vari-Angle LCD gave me the freedom and creativity of framing the object, which I rarely used before. And also, the low light Auto Focus, I just love it!!!

From this FUJIFILM ‘Straight Out of Camera Project’ of X-S10, I learned about the Film Simulation, which is also new for me. It’s like shooting with a classic film, but you’re actually working on digital with today’s best technology in a camera. I can choose directly the ‘film’ that I want to choose, see and get the result instantly. And the best thing is I can always edit and twist a bit of the contrast, shadow, and any other details as I wanted directly in the camera. This is why I said this FUJIFILM X-S10 is a APS-C sensor camera with great quality of images in RAF and even its JPEG file. In this project, my favorite Film Simulation is CLASSIC CHROME, it gave warm feeling and contrast of colors, perfect to apply in my photo session with the models in a fashion-couture mood. Another Film Simulation that I use is ETERNA/CINEMA, it looks good for a clean visual with a lot of highlights, but also looks good on the skin tone of the models. The last one that made me fall in love is the BLACK and WHITE toning, I’m using MONOCHROME+ Green Filter which makes the red makeup looks deep and contrast. This MONOCHROME+ Film Simulation has a different filter that you can choose and fit best your work in photography. Well, I guess this FILM SIMULATION is something that other camera brands don’t develop that much, and apparently, it’s very useful for us photographers in this digital era. You can submit or upload your work of photography directly anytime once you shoot and create the mood using the Film Simulation.

For an APS-C Sensor Camera, FUJIFILM X-S10 gave me the quality of the image, especially when you work with the right lens. Yes, I’m working with APS-C lenses this time, which means the XF56mmF1.2 R is equivalent to 85mm f1.8 lens, smaller size of the lens with the same quality. From the various range of lenses from FUJIFILM, there are 3 lenses I just tried that I love most. It’s the FUJINON XF35mmF1.4 R, very lightweight and easy to bring to everywhere with a good bokeh result. The other one is FUJINON XF50mmF1.0 R WR great for portrait shots with fast autofocus, and the last one is FUJINON XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro because I love to take details of beauty shots in a very close up one. Of course, I’d like to try and explore the other lenses of FUJIFILM as they provide a series of lenses from wide to telephoto, also variations of great Prime Lens for Photography and Videography.

The last thing that amazes me is FUJIFILM Firmware Updates that keep updating a better system for camera users, this helps us photographers a lot! The conclusion is, this ‘Straight Out of Camera’ projects makes me a better photographer. You need to be very precise and detailed about your photo session, it has to be a great work of photography straight out of my camera because I won’t be able to edit it. And with this FUJIFILM X-S10, Challenge accepted.
