Personal Best vol.2 | Pieter D’Hoop

For me it is very hard to choose one favorite picture, because that changes every day or with a different mood.

This picture I took in the Jane Antwerp, the two Michelin starred restaurant is based in an old church and is now a culinary temple. After they did a whole restyling of the restaurant last summer, I spend two days and night there to capture the whole restaurant during changing light conditions.

The picture is taken in a large brass shape they use as light modifiers in the restaurant. Because of the changing light and the stained glass I had one moment to capture the dish this way.

Interior of the restaurant

I work for chefs who always demand and strive for perfection, they work with top products. I expect the same perfection of my material. It is therefore very important that I can rely on all the material I use. Even it is just food photography, I often have only a few moments to make the perfect image.
Asking a chef to remake the dish again, because I’ve made a mistake somewhere or I’ve had material failure is certainly not the intention.

For this I must be able to rely on material that is ready for that assignment. I use the GFX 50S from Fujifilm to capture all dishes. The sharpness, color reproduction and the dynamic range allow me to be very creative with different lighting conditions. Especially the EVF Tilt adapter allows me to deal with circumstances and viewpoints in a variety of ways. The GFX captures all textures and details very nicely.

I’m hoping one day Fujiflm will add the EVF Tilt adapter to another X-Camera. It would open a whole new world to many photographers.

I am certainly not a technical photographer, I learned photography by trial and error without ever following 1 lesson or workshop. Maybe that’s not the easiest way, but for me the way to create my own style. I am convinced that every photo makes me better. Every day there are different circumstances, it is my eye and my experiences that ensures me to make a beautiful image, The Fujifilm camera’s are a really nice tool to help me achieve that.
