Development Story vol.04: Design that Elevates the Concept
The notion that a camera is merely a tool for taking photos, and that design is unnecessary, is a fallacy. A camera is not just a tool; the role of design extends far beyond decoration. Exceptional design fulfills the desire to own the camera, ignites the urge to photograph, and simultaneously reflects the character of the device.
This is especially true for rangefinder-style cameras, where an attractive design is an essential element.
A design that captures the heart naturally encourages you to carry the camera every day and experience wonderful moments through the viewfinder. This inspiring design brings the compact, lightweight GFX100RF to life.

Using the X100 as a benchmark for rangefinder style, the GFX100RF also possesses the dignity and presence unique to large format cameras. Its appearance pays homage to the iconic cameras produced by FUJIFILM in the past, and the thoughtful details bring joy each time you handle it. Achieving this design required a delicate balance among various elements.

To give the GFX a distinct “hobbyist” appeal, we designed the controls— such as the three levers and dials on the front of the camera and the aspect ratio selection dial— with uniqueness in mind. The aspect ratio selection dial not only contributes to the camera’s sense of heritage but also serves as a signature feature, recalling the history of medium format cameras.

We aimed to create true integration through meticulous fine-tuning of elements, including the lens position and the shape of the grip, which connects seamlessly to the levers and dials on the front of the camera.

One of the camera’s standout features is that, without sparing any expense or time, the top deck was carefully machined from a solid block of aluminum for the first time in a FUJIFILM digital camera. In addition to the top deck, the hood, aperture ring, hot shoe cover, and battery compartment cover are all crafted from solid metal, reflecting uncompromising quality.

The hallmark of metal is its cold touch, which gradually learns the warmth of your hand. The sharp edges of the top and base plates, combined with a precision and solidity unattainable through stamping or die-cutting, provide a tactile experience that resonates with the photographer’s heart.

This design is precise yet gentle, refined yet rugged. It is crafted to inspire photographers to venture out into the field with confidence.
We hope you will hold the camera, adjust the aperture, operate the dials and levers, and toggle the aspect ratio dial, fostering a deep connection with it. We desire that your creative spirit is ignited each time you engage with the GFX100RF.
