York Place Studios (UK)

Liam and Dominique Shaw, the brother and sister reportage duo behind York Place Studios have built a reputation for creating genre-defying wedding imagery with a street photography twist.

Whether shooting weddings, events or street photography; complex multi-layered storytelling, subtle humour and raw intimacy have become a hallmark of York Place Studios’ photography. Their unique approach to shooting weddings has gained an international following, picked up multiple accolades and led to Dominique and Liam being invited to speak at photography events around the world sharing their passion for their craft and their carefully considered ideas about reportage photography.

For Liam and Dominique though it’s never about the complexity of an image, it’s about the feeling behind it and it’s that feeling that has, for over a decade, driven them in their quest to create original, innovative imagery of real, spontaneous moments.

The Fujifilm X System freed us to shoot the way we always wanted, combining street influences with our wedding images, injecting colour, subtle characterisation and layering into our photographs. The Fujifilm X series gives us the creative freedom to pursue the type of images that we love.

When we first picked up the original X100 back in 2011 we immediately recognised the potential of the system. The styling, the size, the weight, the tactile controls, even the click of the shutter made us somehow excited to just go out there and shoot with this stunning piece of machinery and see the beautiful film-like images it produced. The X100 immediately became the camera that travelled everywhere with us and when we each took it abroad we found that holiday snaps suddenly felt like they could be something more – that this was a serious camera that deserved more than just snapshots. Soon the holiday snapshots became trips specifically to shoot with the camera and explore our love of street photography.

With the release of the X-T1 suddenly our hobby cameras started finding their way into our professional wedding work – gradually at first until we quite quickly realised that there were more X-T1 images in there than photographs from our DSLR’s. It was when the X-Pro2 came our though that we knew we absolutely had a game changer on our hands and the DSLR’s were swiftly retired completely. Here was the camera that truly freed us to shoot the way we’d always wanted – the line between small hobby camera and professional workhorse was ripped up and suddenly one camera could give us everything we wanted. That increased synchronicity between our hobby and our profession acted as something of a catalyst in doing what we’d been striving for – combining our techniques of shooting street photography and wedding photography into one singular photographic style, and we’ve never been happier in our work. The X-Pro 2 has been absolutely integral to that and with our initial testing of the X-Pro3 in Mexico providing exciting results and the X100V immediately looking like being a brilliant accompaniment to our X-Pros and X-E3 we couldn’t be happier with the X-Series lineup. The real magic of all the Fujifilm cameras is the joy that it brings creating these photos, what Fujifilm have achieved is a camera system that you want to shoot with and that is a true gift.
