Childfood - Recipes for Young Coolinary Explorers

Luca Scarcella

Born in 1989, I’m based between Los Angeles and Turin. I’m a freelance investigative journalist, an author and a creative. I lead a team of machine learning engineers, data scientists, photographers, web developers, sound designers and other creatives, that collaborate with me to create cross-media journalism projects, documentaries, and podcasts.

Since 2013 I’ve also been working – as a communication consultant – with several brands and web agencies in Italy and UK (with clients like Salomon, The North Face, Google, Gordon’s), and I’m a member of the jury of Social Creative Awards, with Facebook, Gucci, Lamborghini and many more. Recently, I was recognized by Thrive Global (magazine founded and directed by Arianna Huffington) as “one of the most influential under 30 in the publishing field right now, capable to merge effectively new technologies, social media and journalism”. I was also a TEDx organizer and licensee, and in June 2018 I did my first TEDx talk: “ Investigative journalism based on music theory”. I’m a pianist, graduated at the Conservatory of Turin in 2011.

Now I’m studying journalism at UCLA in order to grow professionally.
I’m the author of “Childfood – Recipes for Young Coolinary Explorers”, a cookbook for children in which I involved 23 top chefs and as many illustrators, from all over the world, and in 30 days I raised more than $ 61 thousand USD to fund it on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.

Childfood – Recipes for Young Coolinary Explorers is a breathtaking book for children, extremely helpful for a balanced and healthy diet, featuring the art and expertise of 23 of the best chefs in the world, including Massimo Bottura, Dominique Crenn, Gaggan Anand, Francis Mallmann. And as many illustrators, including the great Pascal Campion, Nikkolas Smith and Giacomo Bevilacqua. A melting pot of cultures, traditions and flavors. The recipes, that the stars of world cuisine have shared with us, have a common denominator: they are childhood memories, linked to moments spent with their families, and which inspired them to pursue the career that sees them excel today.

The recipes are accompanied by 23 stories, based on one of the main ingredients of the dish that follow, that will help children and parents to discover the importance to use healthy raw food material in the kitchen.

We see food as what brings people together, and look at diversity as an opportunity and not as a threat. And with Childfood, combining two passions such as writing and gastronomy, we have created a tool that we would love to have when we were kids. Childfood offers children the opportunity to create memories and experiences to share with their parents, or guardians, older siblings, and embrace diversity, create strong bonds, build bridges and break down the walls, against racism, ignorance and intolerance.

An innovative project, that we created using crowdfunding. In 30 days we have reached and exceeded the goal of 50 thousand dollars. Furthermore, 25% of the funds raised were donated to the non-profit association Charity: Water. Did you know that every year about one million children die for contaminated water related problems? That’s more than any war and disease combined. Thanks to our support and to the first copies sold, 300 more children have already had access to clean water today.

An innovative project, as well as innovative is the new Fujifilm X-S10 mirrorless camera, a small and handy, versatile and fast, and very intuitive one. Definitely, the optimal machine for the production of photographic and video material for a project like Childfood.

While the still life of the dishes were managed with the Large Format GFX 50S, Fujifilm X-S10 gave his perfect and precious contribution in the creation of the different contents useful to tell the backstage work with the children and the chef, regarding the preparation and the sharing of food.

During the shooting day in Biella (in northern Italy), at the restaurant “Matteo Caffè e Cucina”, the new Fujifilm X-S10, ergonomic and light, was the perfect companion for this job: with discretion it laid her gaze on the chef Matteo’s kitchen and his staff, capturing intimate moments, others of frenzy and speed, others of precision and delicacy.

The feeling with the X-S10 was exceptional from the beginning: it is a product that was created to immediately meet the needs of both professionals and amateurs, useful in taking pictures and in shooting videos. With an increasing consumption of online video content in our daily lives, the new Fujifilm mirrorless, a transversal and dynamic tool, is the perfect choice in the field of multimedia productions.

Fujifilm X-S10 can record video in 4K, with digital image stabilizer, and features a dedicated video menu. The 18 film simulations allow you to immediately have images that are ready, perfect, and with a defined look. Fast and accurate autofocus, 4 customizable pre-settings and a LCD screen, which can be placed in the most suitable position for shooting and recording.

With the X-S10, we used two Fujinon lenses: XF35mmF1.4 R and XF80mmF2.8.

The XF35mmF1.4 R is most likely one of Fujifilm’s best optics. It adapts to many situations, is very bright, clear even at full aperture, giving magical bokeh effects. Autofocus is also very efficient, especially when the lens is paired with new generation cameras such as the latest Fujifilm mirrorless.

The XF80mmF2.8 is a razor-sharp macro lens, and it renders colors flashy. Very fast in focusing, it offers exceptional bokeh effects especially on portraits and close-ups. The stabilization allows you to easily lengthen the shutter speed, and thus avoid blur, if this is not what you look for.

Childfood is like a metastory, a story within a story. It tells of incredible journeys of culinary raw materials over time, of chefs who have led cooking to become art, of illustrators who paint ideas, but above all of rediscovering the quality of bonds between people, an inexhaustible source of happiness.

FUJIFILM X-S10 was the ideal and discreet companion to tell this story, Childfood story.
