Jaime Avila (Mexico)

Jaime is passionate about peculiar characters easily unnoticed within the rhythm of public places, mainly in Mexico City. Self taught photographer, Jaime became serious about street photography in 2011 when attended summer school at New York University and developed skills of remaining imperceptible while photographing strangers. His interest into photographing people took him to volunteer as a portrait photographer for TED Prize winner JR’s InsideOut Project, where thousands of portraits were exchanged and exposed throughout 26 cities in 15 countries. He’s also a freelance food photographer who teams with his wife and Chef Jacky, creating recipes and photographs for both editorial and commercial use.

X Series cameras made me invisible.

Silent, compact and with its signature retro look, the X100 was crucial into developing my style. I was able to remain unnoticed in a crowd while taking pictures focusing on the story I wanted to portrait, instead of being aware of my subjects’ reactions. I seldom ask for permission to take someone’s photograph and X Series cameras have helped me not to disturb my subjects while getting optimum image quality in any light situation.
