A Day Off with the FUJIFILM X100VI
In my work as a professional photographer, each shot I take is more than just pressing the shutter. It’s a technical challenge, often demanding meticulous planning and weeks of post-production. Perfecting a single image can consume hours of editing, ensuring every detail aligns with the vision in my head. This is my norm. But today is different. Today, I’m leaving my GFX kit behind and opting for something simpler—a small, yet mighty FUJIFILM X100VI slung over my shoulder. It’s my day off, and I’m embracing the beauty of simplicity.
Exploring a new city with friends, I find myself looking at the world with fresh eyes. My camera becomes more than just a tool—it’s a portal, allowing me to capture the spontaneous beauty that surrounds us. This day isn’t about lugging heavy gear, waiting for the perfect setup, or obsessing over light conditions. It’s about living in the moment, appreciating the stories that unfold naturally, and viewing the world through a more relaxed lens.
What I’ve always loved about photography is the ability to tell a story without words. But when you’re so deeply embedded in the technical aspects of your craft, it’s easy to lose sight of that initial joy. Today, however, is different. It’s a day to rediscover why I fell in love with photography in the first place: the sheer joy of capturing life as it happens, unfiltered and authentic.
There’s a certain aesthetic I adore—one that harkens back to the classic feel of film photography. The rich tones, the soft grain, the way shadows and highlights interact. Yet, I have to admit, I’m too trigger-happy and impatient for analog. I’ve never been one to wait for rolls of film to develop. That’s why the FUJIFILM X100VI is such a perfect fit for me. It allows me to emulate the character and mood of those classic film stocks directly in-camera. With the X100VI, I can create images that carry that nostalgic, filmic look without needing any post-processing or retouching.
One of the main reasons I fell in love with this camera is its film simulations. They’ve completely transformed the way I shoot on days like today. There’s something incredibly satisfying about capturing an image that already has the look and feel I want, right out of the camera, without the need to process RAW files later. My personal favorite is Nostalgic Negative. Its warm shadows and vintage tones instantly transport me to another time, giving my images a timeless quality. And when I want to mix things up, I often switch to Classic Chrome for its more subdued, muted palette. Each film simulation reveals the world in unique and vivid ways, allowing me to experiment with mood and atmosphere as I shoot.
While tomorrow I’ll be back in the studio, diving deep into the edits of my latest project, today is different. Today is about embracing the spontaneity of life—capturing the small, meaningful moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. There’s no pressure, no perfectionism, just me, my camera, and the company of good friends.
It’s days like this that remind me why I do what I do. The FUJIFILM X100VI strips photography down to its essentials, allowing me to reconnect with the simple joys of the craft. Whether it’s the texture of the city streets, the laughter of my friends, or the way the light hits a passing stranger’s face, I’m able to capture it all effortlessly.
As much as I love the challenge of crafting the perfect image, sometimes the most beautiful moments are the ones that happen naturally, without any effort at all. Today is a testament to that – when you step back from the complexity, simplicity can reveal a world of wonders through the lens.
And that, for me, is the magic of photography.”
