Connections are an essential part of life; whether it’s an emotional connection to another, a physical connection to a place or thing, or a technological connection to a tool or network. Without the ability to form relationships, there is little left.

This is a topic explored in detail by global grant award recipient of the GFX Challenge Grant Program 2021, Rodrigo Illescas, in his project The Cathedrals of Nostalgia. Using FUJIFILM GFX100S, paired with FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR and GF63mmF2.8 R WR lenses, Rodrigo has created a powerful series of photographs that document the decline of rural communities in Argentina following widespread closure of the rural railroad network.

“Many of these communities are becoming lost in Argentina, with the few remaining residents left fighting for their memory,” says Rodrigo. “My main motivation for creating The Cathedrals of Nostalgia was to rescue the memory of these towns and the stories they hold.”

Around a century ago, the Argentinian rail network was enjoying a period of strong growth. The state was expanding agricultural frontiers and capitalizing on areas that held value. When fertile land was discovered, a train station was built, and the land was split up into plots for families to settle on and farm.

Not only did the railroad provide a way for these farmers to transport their crops to the markets of nearby cities, but also brought with it the high wages of railroad workers. Before long, thriving communities were established.

However, in the sixties, a plan was introduced to reduce railway transportation by a third in favor of motorway transport. Over subsequent decades, the rail connections acting as essential lifelines for these settlements were closed and dismantled, strangling economies and leading to mass migration – in turn devastating local communities.

Born in the southern port city of Bahía Blanca – a settlement directly affected by the closures – this is a subject close to Rodrigo’s heart.

“I am now in the city of Buenos Aires, 700km from Bahía Blanca – that is the journey I have taken in my life. I want to rescue the memory of that journey by making it again through this project,” he explains.

“But it’s not just about my journey,” he adds. “I want to raise awareness of all the towns surrounding the capital, and how they have been affected by the closure of lines throughout the Buenos Aires province.”

By using strobes to create windows of life amid the desolation of these abandoned towns during dusk’s inevitable transition into darkness, Rodrigo’s project shines a literal and metaphorical light on the plight of individual residents.

“It’s about the people who used to live there – and those who still live there, resisting, and keeping the memory of their story alive,” says Rodrigo.

“Each one of these inhabitants is like a cathedral of nostalgia erected in the middle of loneliness. Portrayed as guests to their own world, these images offer a glimpse into their stories.”

As one of the global grant award recipients of the GFX Challenge Grant Program 2021, Rodrigo received $10,000 to help fund his project. And while the money was essential for making the series happen, it provided him with much more than financial support.

“I was excited when I found out – and I am excited right now, just remembering it! Such recognition reinforced the value of my work. This project is not only extremely important for me, but also the country, so for Fujifilm to have selected it means so much as both a human and an Argentinian.”

Rodrigo explains how the physical existence of The Cathedrals of Nostalgia is just the beginning of the value brought by the grant.

The opportunities the project has presented and the awareness it continues to raise mean value is still felt today – and will resonate long into the future.

“Now I have these images, I am able to knock on different doors to find a platform from which to tell the story of these communities,” he tells us. “My aim has always been to raise awareness in the cities and the capital, so having an opportunity to develop exhibitions and photo books is very important for me.”

Indeed, with intentions to expand The Cathedrals of Nostalgia throughout Argentina, this is just the beginning for Rodrigo.

“My plan for the future is to extend this project into other provinces because the problem is bigger than just what’s happening in Buenos Aires. Argentina is a huge place, and the problem is around the whole country.
