David Goldman seeks community and connection

In 2020, photographer David Goldman set out on a meaningful new project – a multimedia exploration of those whose lives have been indelibly marked by motorcycling. Combining striking environmental portraiture with geotags and audio recordings of each of his subjects, he traveled North America on two wheels, revealing far more than a shared interest.

Three years later, a new leg in the adventure took shape, taking David to Europe and placing him in front of a brand-new batch of inspiring riders. Throughout the summer of 2023, he forged a compelling story of togetherness and individuality, the mystery of community, and above all, tireless devotion. These are The Motorcycle Portraits.

“I’ve been riding bikes consistently for 12 years, but I got my license very young. First of all, though, I’m a portrait photographer,” David begins. “My whole career has been about trying to find stories, or subject matter, that is more than just one photo. I’m always thinking, how can I get one more?

“When this project began, I was coming out of a weird time. We went through the Covid-19 pandemic, I moved from California to Canada, and my mom died. There were all these variables in my life, but I knew I had to keep working. I needed to be creative. Fujifilm were gracious enough to support another chapter in this story with X Series gear, so off I went.”

While a study of fellow motorcycle riders was certainly a personal drive for David, his search for deeper meaning has always plumbed the depths – going far beneath the surface of his subjects. This project was no different, and he was quick to find the foundations of his story.

“I’d ask all my subjects the same three questions,” he reveals. “I asked them to tell me how they first got started with motorcycles, to tell me about a great life experience that’s happened as a direct result, and finally what the vehicle represents to them. They gave me far more esoteric and emotional answers than I ever expected. I had to share that.

“There’s a myriad of niches within the motorcycle community,” the photographer continues, “including those with a negative image. When you compare those people to the other verticals within this family – racers, builders, collectors, travelers – sure there’s a thin line that connects them all, but you’ll discover great people with powerful stories that you may not expect. I wanted these individuals to have the chance to tell their stories. It’s not for me, or anyone else, to say who these people are.”

David’s travels embodied the spirit of taking the long way around. He landed in Ireland, rode north to south through the United Kingdom, then moved across to France, exploring onwards through Spain, Portugal, Italy, and the remainder of the continent. Adventures were had, the clarity of what it meant to be a rider continued to crystalize – and themes grew.

“I remember very clearly when I took my motorcycle training class at 16, the instructor said: ‘When you break down, know that a motorcyclist is going to stop and help you out.’ And that’s so true. What I’m interested in is how people bond and connect over something,” David explains.

“Riders always give each other a passing wave, and you find similar traditions across a lot of different activities. But why don’t you find it everywhere? Why do we have to be wearing a certain outfit, driving a certain vehicle, or sharing something in common to truly care about one another? I’m interested in understanding how we see each other. It’s sort of like sociology and I find that fascinating. I don’t know that I’m going to come to the answer, but I want to see it in action and share it.”

Despite extensive travel around the globe by way of motorcycle, David doesn’t consider himself entirely ingrained in the lifestyle. Like his subjects, he’s devoted a lifetime to a craft, but his own passions live in portraiture.

“I love riding,” David effuses, “but really, I see the motorcycle as a tool. I’ve spoken to a few people who’ve traveled extensively, like Elspeth Beard, the first British woman to travel around the world on a motorcycle, and a lot of us feel the same. In her explanation, it gave her access to something greater. The camera is a tool in the same way. I actually find them very similar. To me, it’s a key to enter communities.

“When I go to document a place and have the camera in my hand, the community opens up and welcomes me. There aren’t many other things I’m aware of that can crack a door open like that.

“If I had to answer the questions I ask my subjects, the only thing I can think to say is that the bike has allowed me to meet incredible people, see amazing things, and share those stories. That’s what motorcycling means to me.”

And what stories he’s collected – both personally and for a viewer of his work. It’s one of an artist’s greatest challenges to reflect on their own creations, but David has standout moments from his European travels.

“I met the Formula One chief engineer Ben Norton, and he took me around the factory. I can’t explain how incredible that is to me. I grew up loving Formula One. I’ve been watching since the eighties, when you still had to tell people in the United States: ‘Yes, it’s racing, but they don’t go around in circles,’” he laughs.

“I also met with Christian Moretti from Plan B Motorcycles, near Lake Maggiore,” David recalls. “He’s a builder – and I’ve met all these builders – but while I was staying with Christian, he showed me how to weld and use the English Wheel. These were experiences I’d never had before.

“Then there was Giacomo Agostini, a 15-time Grand Prix world champion, who I first photographed in Brooklyn a couple years ago. I stopped during this leg to visit his home museum. I sat in his kitchen, thinking: ‘I’m sharing a drink with the single most successful motorcycle racer of all time!’

“The people who view this series will always have their own favorites,” David notes. “For me, a lot of times, the best images are about the connection I had with the person.”

David concludes with a moment of reflection on his place as a storyteller, and a look ahead at the future of the project.

“I know I’m incredibly privileged to be able to do this, and that comes with a responsibility. It’s important to share these things with people, either through the images or by talking about what travel will teach you. If I can be a conduit for experience and hopefully inspire people, I’m happy.

“What I’d love now is for the project to be seen on the widest level. I hope the people in a position to showcase this series don’t limit their scope, thinking it will only appeal to a certain group of enthusiasts. If people look at these images and only see a bunch of motorcyclists, they’re missing a lot.

“These portraits are of motorcyclists, but they could have been truck drivers, beekeepers, or anything else. It’s about individuals and finding a sense of connectedness, as well as a chance to view and listen to stories. Way beyond these people’s mutual passion, that’s what I wanted to share.”
