Based in New York, Bess Adler isn’t short of photographic experience. She works professionally for a variety of publications, but a passion for subjects of personal interest still runs deep. In her free time, she’s continued to create moving documentary work, primarily focused on communities.

Her view of documentary photography as an educational tool only furthers a demand for truth. In Bess’s eyes, this can only be discovered by digging deeper. In many cases, that means becoming completely immersed – which is why she relies on the unobtrusive design of FUJIFILM X-Pro3. The camera, with a selection of XF primes, has helped shape her considered process.

After a lifetime of practice, Bess has narrowed a complex process down to three simple tips. She encourages you to research a subject, invest time into that community, then seek out intimate moments. All in all, you’ll be thinking deeply about your work – a surefire way to improve.

Once you’ve created your image, upload it using the ‘Enter Now’ button below by 11:59PM (EST) on February 28, 2023. You can also download a PDF with a summary of Bess’s advice, which is as follows:

1) Do your research
2) Become a familiar face
3) Document intimate moments

Good luck!
