Ryan & Heidi Browne are the founders of Forged in the North, a club of like-minded artists all cut from the same creative cloth. They collaborate and challenge each other for the sake of the craft, and for the couples they work with. They are admittedly a little competitive, but that only drives them to redefine their work, day in and day out. If caught in a swanky mood, the pair would mention that they’ve been recognized as some of the best wedding photographers in the world by Brides Magazine, and were winners of the prestigious Rangefinder Rising Stars award in 2015. But they’re a bit too bashful to ever say that out loud, so just make sure to read this in your head.

Ryan & Heidi Browne share a creative marriage in more ways than one. Beyond the exchanging of rings, the pair have pooled their imaging talents to form production company Forged in the North. Fittingly, much of their work is comprised of wedding photography and videography – though you can bet their films are far from ordinary. The pair’s output is steeped in gorgeous naturalism, with a distinctly cinematic flair.

Such images could only be created with X Series and GFX System tools, but as ever, equipment can only perform at its best in the hands of skilled users. Ryan & Heidi consider every element of their films with great care. Even the smallest details build the big picture for filmmakers at this level – but that’s not to say the process has to be elaborate.

Over the years, Ryan & Heidi have discovered the perfect balance between simplified workflows and stunning results. That doesn’t mean emulating their style will come easy, but their three tips are sure to help. They emphasize finding drama in available light sources, considering the impact of ambient sound as an emotive tool, and using enticing editing techniques.
