Ben Ono

Ono is in love with the natural world and has dedicated his career towards creating a healthy planet – communicating the beauty of the Earth and its inhabitant’s journey towards a sustainable future.

Graduating from the University of California San Diego with a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering, Ono spent the first 10 years of his career working in the environmental sector; enforcing air pollution regulations in the Pacific North West, monitoring water distribution and sanitation in the Eastern Sierras and managed wastewater infrastructre projects on O’ahu to help establish a sustainable future for the people of Hawai’i.

While having spent his early year dedicated to the scientific and environmental fields, Ono knew he could have a greater impact by communicating the planet’s story through filmmaking and visual imagery. His works transcend the line between realism and abstraction. His films and photographs are infused with an intimate knowledge of nature, people, a passion for pure color, and a rhythm drawn from life itself.

His trademark style involves abstracting the island lifestyle to lend the work a much lauded painterly appearance. He allows each individual to step into the image and bring forth their own visual history. The ensuing narrative is enriched through the power of memory, infusing a personal creative process with universal appeal. Ono’s art imparts a calming, meditative and contemplative quality intended to elicit a deeper consideration of ourselves and our environment, wherein the images read as luminous, rhythmic paintings.

Benjamin Ono lives and creates on the North Shore of O’ahu, Hawai’i.
