Personalising your camera

Many aspects of the X100VI can be customised to suit your preferences, such as controls, displays and exposure modes.

❮ ❯

Controls, swipes and dials

Customise the behaviour of the camera’s function buttons and touchscreen swipe gestures.

Press and hold the DISP BACK button to go straight to the FUNCTION (Fn) SETTING customisation screen.

Scroll through the various Fn buttons and other controls, including the gesture controls that work via the X100VI’s LCD screen, scrolling right to change the control’s default behaviour.

❮ ❯

Customising viewfinder and touchscreen information

The information you see when you compose a scene can be changed so only the data you need is shown.

Press MENU OK and scroll down to the SET UP menu tab.

Choose SCREEN SET-UP setting and scroll to DISP. CUSTOM SETTING.

Select either OVF (optical viewfinder) or EVF/LCD (electronic viewfinder and LCD screen).

Choose the items you’d like to see in the viewfinder and on the camera’s screen.

Press the DISP BACK button once you’re done.

❮ ❯

Customising the Q Menu

The Q Menu gives you information at a glance and quick access to camera settings. You can also change what’s on the Q Menu screen to suit your way of working.

Hold down the Q button for a couple of seconds, and the customisation screen will appear.

Choose the menu item location you want to customise and press MENU OK.

Find the function you’d like to appear in this menu location and press MENU OK.

Repeat the above steps for each menu location you want to change. Press DISP BACK to finish.

❮ ❯

Customising Film Simulation modes

You’ve probably discovered your camera’s Film Simulation modes by now, but did you know that by altering the colour and contrast, you can create picture settings to your own tastes, too?

Press the Q button to display the Q Menu.

Adjust highlights, shadows and colour saturation with the H Tone, S Tone and Colour options using the rear command dial.

❮ ❯

You can save these new settings as a custom preset for instant recall.

Press MENU OK, navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu and choose EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING.

Choose a custom preset number and scroll right. Scroll right on EDIT/CHECK and press MENU OK.

Choose the shooting menu items that you wish to edit and press MENU OK. Adjust the selected item as desired.

Press DISP BACK and then select SAVE THE CHANGES.

You can also choose to EDIT CUSTOM NAME and give the new preset a name you’ll remember.

To load your preset, press MENU OK, navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu and choose SELECT CUSTOM SETTING, then find the one you saved and press MENU OK.

Focusing modes

❮ ❯

Focus point, place and size

The size of the active focusing area used by your X100VI can be changed in size and moved around the frame. In the camera’s Q Menu, choose from Single Point (highly selective), Zone (for erratically moving subjects) and Wide/Tracking (uses the whole frame) using the rear command dial. To move the active point or zone, or change its size:

Move or press the Focus Lever.

Move the Focus Lever to shift the focus point/area up, down, left or right, or tap the area on the touchscreen.

Rotate the front or rear command dials to change the size of the focus point/area.

Press MENU OK or half-press the shutter release button.

Did you know that pressing the Focus Lever moves the focusing point back to the centre of the frame?

❮ ❯

Custom AF-C modes

The X100VI tracks and focuses on moving objects differently, depending on the kind of focusing behaviour specified in AF-C (continuous) mode.

Using the Focus Mode selector on the left side of the camera, put the X100VI in AF-C mode, then press MENU OK and navigate to the AF/MF SETTING menu.

Choose AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS, then choose a preset 1-5 based on the action you’re photographing.

Or try setting number 6 to specify your own focusing behaviour.

An advanced autofocus algorithm can also detect a range of specific subjects. In the AF/MF SETTING menu, select FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING or SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING to track human eyes or non-human subjects respectively.

❮ ❯

Making the most of manual focus

When you’re focusing manually, the X100VI offers all kinds of aids to help you achieve critical sharpness.

Put the camera in M focus mode using the Focus Mode selector, then press MENU OK and navigate to the AF/MF SETTING menu.

Scroll down to MF ASSIST and choose from DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE, DIGITAL MICROPRISM or FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT.

Switch on FOCUS CHECK from the AF/MF SETTING menu and the camera will enlarge a central portion of the scene when you begin to manually focus. To achieve the same result without touching the control ring, press the rear command dial like a button.

Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens’s control ring – no change of focus mode necessary.

Image stabilisation

❮ ❯

The X100VI uses an in-body image stabilisation (IS) system, which helps keep still images sharp and video clips smooth when working handheld.

In STILL IMAGE mode, you can set the IS system to be on all the time (CONTINUOUS), only active when an exposure is made (SHOOTING ONLY) or off entirely. The OFF setting is useful if you don’t need IS, for instance when working in very bright light, with the camera on a tripod or when using creative techniques like intentional camera movement.

Press MENU OK and navigate to the SHOOTING SETTING menu.

Select IS MODE and scroll right to choose the option you require.

❮ ❯

In MOVIE mode, IS MODE can be set to in-body image stabilisation only (IBIS), in-body image stabilisation with added digital image stabilisation (IBIS+DIS) or off entirely. It’s very useful for creating smoother footage, without the use of a stabilised support accessory.

There is a further IS MODE BOOST setting, which should be set based on recording style. Turn this setting off when recording with panning, tilting or other camera movements. Turn it on to increase the effectiveness of the IS system when recording a static handheld frame.

Press MENU OK and navigate to the MOVIE SETTING menu.

Select IS MODE or IS MODE BOOST and scroll right to choose the options you require.

Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder

The X100VI features a unique viewfinder, which can be switched between optical and electronic modes at the flick of the viewfinder selector switch on the front of the camera.

❮ ❯

Optical viewfinder

The optical viewfinder (OVF) gives a real-world view of the subject, just as you’d see with a traditional rangefinder camera.

The bright frame lines shift when you focus the camera, to correct for any slight parallax error.

You can see objects slightly outside the bright frame lines, allowing you to better anticipate when they might move into the picture.

In M (manual) focus mode, while looking through the viewfinder, press the Viewfinder Selector Lever inwards, towards the lens. This activates a small electronic display in the OVF, which gives 100% magnification to aid focusing.

❮ ❯

Electronic viewfinder

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) previews what you’ll get when you make a picture, from exposure and white balance to depth-of-field and focus.

Pressing in the rear control dial (as if it were a button) magnifies a portion of the EVF, centred around the active focusing point, to aid critical focusing.

When you don’t want the EVF to preview exposure and/or white balance (when photographing with studio flash, for example), this can be switched off in the SET UP > SCREEN SET-UP menu. Choose the PREVIEW EXP./WB IN MANUAL MODE option.

Digital Teleconverter

❮ ❯

The X100VI features a fixed 23mmF2 lens, but longer effective focal lengths can be accessed by choosing one of two Digital Teleconverter modes. These modes zoom in on a portion of the camera’s 40.2-megapixel sensor, delivering high-quality images with new perspectives.

1.4x and 2x Digital Teleconverter options increase full-frame equivalent focal length to 50mm and 70mm.

Press the control ring options button and select DIGITAL TELE-CONV. to assign the function, or do so within the BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > CONTROL RING SETTING menu.

Rotate the control ring to change between available degrees of digital teleconversion, as you would the zoom ring on a zoom lens.

When in M focus mode, the control ring can only be used to adjust focus.

Creating video

❮ ❯

Picking the right settings

Press DRIVE/DELETE and select MOVIE to access movie menu.

The first thing to decide is which resolution and frame rate settings to use. You’ll find these options in the MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE MODE menu.

6.2K resolutions offer the highest quality on the X100VI.

Full HD resolutions are a good balance between quality and storage size. In 1080p, you can also access a 240p frame rate for slow motion via MOVIE SETTING and HIGH SPEED REC.

When it comes to frame rates, 24p, 25p or 30p are fine for most normal applications; 24p is often favoured by creative filmmakers for its cinematic look and feel.

Footage recorded at frame rates of 59.94p or 50p can document motion more smoothly. Plus, when played back at normal speeds (30fps or 25fps) during editing, this can deliver silky-smooth slow motion.

Did you know 25p and 50p frame rates are best for European countries, while 30p and 59.94p are more suited to the US? This is because of the different frequencies of mains electricity in these territories, which can cause lights to flicker slightly at 50Hz or 60Hz, respectively.

❮ ❯

Exposure settings for cinematic video

Here’s a group of standard settings you can use in manual (M) exposure mode that will create great-looking, cinematic-style video.

Choose a frame rate – 24fps is a standard used in the movie industry and has a top-end look and feel.

Select a shutter speed that is roughly half the frame rate you’re using, so each frame is exposed for 50% of the time. For example, if you’re recording at 24fps, pick a shutter speed of 1/48 sec or 1/50 sec.

Select the aperture you need for the required depth-of-field. When enabled, the X100VI’s internal ND (neutral density) function reduces exposure by four stops. This allows you to choose wider apertures in bright environments.

Adjust the camera’s ISO sensitivity to get the proper exposure.

❮ ❯

Continuous focusing with video

Switch to AF-C using the Focus Mode selector and the X100VI will adjust focusing as you film, tracking people or subjects around the frame if Face Detection or Subject Detection are switched on. You can turn either function on from the AF/MF SETTING menu. (You can also assign this to the Q Menu.) You can choose from three focus areas: MULTI, which uses the whole frame and focuses on the closest object to the camera, AREA, which lets you be more selective, and WIDE/TRACKING, which lets you lock onto a subject and track it through the whole frame. Find this in MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE AF MODE.

Connecting to your smart device

The X100VI can communicate wirelessly with your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you can transfer pictures to your device, where they can be edited and shared with friends and followers online. You can also use your smart device to work remotely, controlling the camera via a remote live view, and even view a record of your experiences.

*Images for illustrative purposes. FUJIFILM XApp functionality remains consistent, regardless of X Series or GFX System camera connected.
