Focusing modes
Focus point place and size
The size of the active focusing area used by the X-T50 can be changed in size and moved around the frame. In the camera’s Q Menu, you’ll find AF MODE. Using the touchscreen and/or the Rear Command dial, choose from Single Point (highly selective), Zone (for erratically moving subjects) and Wide/Tracking (uses the whole frame and includes Subject Detection modes).
AF MODE can also be set to All. This allows you to scroll through all modes, while changing the position of the active focusing area as described below.
To move the active point or zone, or change its size while on the shooting screen:
- Move the Focus Lever in any direction to activate the active point.
- Move the Focus Lever to shift the focus point/area up, down, left or right.
- Rotate the Front or Rear Command dial to change the size/mode of the focus point/area.
- Press MENU OK or half-press the shutter release button to finish.
Did you know that pressing the DISP/BACK button while you’re adjusting the focus point moves it back to the centre of the frame?
Switch on Subject Detection
Your X-T50 includes several advanced Subject Detection modes. These can be activated from the Q Menu or AF/MF SETTING menu. Subject Detection can be set to ANIMAL, BIRD, AUTOMOBILE, MOTORCYCLE & BIKE, AIRPLANE and TRAIN.
To choose a mode, highlight the Subject Detection icon in the Q Menu and use the Rear Command dial to cycle through the options.
Alternatively, in the AF/MF SETTING menu, choose SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING, scroll right, pick SUBJECT DETECTION ON and scroll right again. Choose the specific mode by pressing MENU OK.
When the camera is in Auto mode, these individual Subject Detection subjects cannot be chosen, but they will all be detected and tracked when SUBJECT DETECTION ON is set to AUTO.
Custom AF-C modes
The way the X-T50 tracks and focuses on moving objects depends on the kind of focusing behaviour specified in continuous AF-C mode.
- Put the camera in AF-C mode by turning the Focus Mode selector to the C position.
- Press the MENU/OK button then navigate to the AF/MF SETTING menu and select AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS. Then choose preset 1-5 based on the action you’re photographing.
- Preset 6 can be used to specify your own focusing behaviour.
- Press MENU OK to confirm your selection.
When you’re focusing manually, your X-T50 offers all kinds of focusing aids to help you nail critical sharpness.
- Put the camera in manual focus mode by turning the Focus Mode selector to the M position.
- Within the AF/MF SETTING menu, scroll down to MF ASSIST and choose from DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE, DIGITAL MICROPRISM or FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT. In DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE you can specify COLOR or MONOCHROME, and in FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT you can choose a colour and intensity that shows up best against the subject.
- Switch on FOCUS CHECK from the AF/MF SETTING menu and the camera will enlarge a central portion of the scene when you begin to focus manually.
- Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens focus barrel in AF-S or AF-C modes.
Image stabilisation
The X-T50 uses an in-body image stabilisation (IS) system, which helps keep still images sharp and video clips smooth when working handheld.
In STILL IMAGE mode, you can set the IS system to be on all the time (CONTINUOUS), only active when an exposure is made (SHOOTING ONLY) or off entirely (OFF). Added Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) will also appear here as +MOTION options when an OIS lens is mounted.
- Press MENU OK and navigate to the SHOOTING SETTING menu.
- Select IS MODE and scroll right to choose the option you require.
- Press MENU OK to confirm your selection.
In MOVIE mode, IS MODE can be set to in-body image stabilisation only (IBIS), in-body image stabilisation with added digital image stabilisation (IBIS+DIS) or off entirely (OFF). When an optically stabilised lens is mounted, OIS will automatically be combined with either IS MODE setting.
There is a further IS MODE BOOST setting, which should be set based on video recording style. Turn this setting OFF when recording with panning, tilting or other camera movements. Turn it ON to increase the effectiveness of the IS system when recording a static handheld frame.
- Press MENU OK and navigate to the MOVIE SETTING menu.
- Select IS MODE or IS MODE BOOST and scroll right to choose the options you require.
- Press MENU OK to confirm your selection.
Film Simulation dial
The X-T50 features a Film Simulation dial, offering you access to your favourite in-camera looks. Simply rotate the dial to one of eight marked positions for PROVIA/STANDARD, Velvia/VIVID, ASTIA/SOFT, CLASSIC CHROME, REALA ACE, CLASSIC Neg., NOSTALGIC Neg. or ACROS.
Three more positions on the dial – FS1, FS2 and FS3 – hold preferred Film Simulations. To set your preferences:
- Press MENU OK, enter the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu, then scroll to FILM SIMULATION DIAL SETTING.
- Scroll right on any of the three slots, then navigate through Film Simulation options.
- Press Q during selection for a description of the highlighted Film Simulation.
- Press MENU OK to confirm your selection.
The Film Simulation dial’s final C position offers automatic Film Simulation selection when the X-T50 is in Auto mode. In any manual mode, it enables quick look adjustments via the Q Menu, which will be saved.
- Turn the Film Simulation dial to C, then press the Q Menu button.
- Navigate to Q Menu items and adjust settings using the Rear Command dial.
- Press DISP BACK to save and exit.
Customising Film Simulation modes
You can alter a Film Simulation’s colour, contrast and other image qualities to create your own unique looks. For simple adjustments:
- Press the Q Menu button.
- Adjust highlights, shadows and colour saturation with the H Tone, S Tone and Colour options using the Rear Command dial.
For more detailed adjustments and to save image quality settings as a custom profile:
- Press MENU OK, then navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu and choose EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING.
- Choose a numbered CREATE NEW slot, then scroll right.
- Press MENU OK to confirm creation, then choose EDIT/CHECK.
- Scroll through menu items to edit, including base Film Simulation, and confirm adjustments to any selected items by pressing MENU OK.
- With all changes made, press Q to save.
You can also choose to EDIT CUSTOM NAME and give the new preset a name you’ll remember.
To load your preset, press MENU OK, navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu and choose SELECT CUSTOM SETTING. Choose your preferred custom slot by pressing MENU OK.
Digital Teleconverter
The X-T50 features two Digital Teleconverter modes. These modes zoom in on a portion of the camera’s 40.2-megapixel sensor, delivering high-quality images with new perspectives. Digital Teleconverter options increase the focal length of a mounted lens by 1.4x and 2.0x.
- Press MENU OK, enter the SHOOTING SETTING menu, then choose DIGITAL TELE-CONV.
- Choose your preferred 1.4x or 2.0x teleconversion rate, based on the on-screen preview.
Recording video
Picking the right settings
Press DRIVE/DELETE and select MOVIE to access the Movie menu. Now, choose resolution and frame rate settings. You’ll find these options in the MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE MODE menu.
- 2K resolutions offer the highest quality on the X-T50.
- 4K resolutions are a good balance between quality and storage size.
- FHD (1080p) resolutions are great for web and other low-res playback uses.
- In FHD, you can also access a 240p frame rate for slow motion. Choose HIGH SPEED REC within the MOVIE SETTING menu.
- 24p, 25p or 30p frame rates are fine for most normal applications. 24p is often favoured by creative filmmakers for its cinematic look and feel.
- 94p or 50p document motion more smoothly. Plus, when played back at normal speeds (30fps or 25fps), this can deliver a more modest slow-motion effect.
Did you know 25p and 50p frame rates are best for European countries, while 30p and 59.94p are more suited to the US? This is because of the different frequencies of mains electricity in these territories, which can cause lights to flicker slightly at 50Hz or 60Hz, respectively.
Exposure settings for cinematic video
Here’s a group of standard settings you can use in manual (M) exposure mode that will create great-looking, cinematic-style video.
- Choose a frame rate – 24fps is a standard used in the movie industry and has a top-end look and feel.
- Select a shutter speed that is roughly half the frame rate you’re using, so each frame is exposed for 50% of the time. For example, if you’re recording at 24fps, pick a shutter speed of 1/48 sec or 1/50 sec.
- Select the aperture you need for the required depth-of-field.
- Adjust the camera’s ISO sensitivity to get the proper exposure.
Continuous focusing with video
Switch to AF-C using the Focus Mode selector and the X-T50 will adjust focusing as you film, tracking people or subjects around the frame if Face Detection or Subject Detection are switched on. You can turn either function on from the AF/MF SETTING menu. (You can also assign this to the Q Menu.)
You can choose from three focus areas: MULTI, which uses the whole frame and focuses on the closest object to the camera; AREA, which lets you be more selective; and WIDE/TRACKING, which lets you lock onto a subject and track it through the whole frame. Find this in MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE AF MODE.
Connecting to your smart device
The X-T50 can communicate wirelessly with your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you can transfer pictures to your device, where they can be edited and shared with friends and followers online. You can also use your smart device to work remotely, controlling the camera via a remote live view, and even view a record of your experiences.
