Quick Start Guide FUJIFILM X-A5

Congratulations on your new FUJIFILM X-A5! This quick start guide introduces your camera’s features and functions and will help you get more creative with your photography.

Contents

  • Personalising your camera
  • Focusing modes
  • Super selfies
  • Shooting video
  • Connecting to your smart device

Personalising your camera

Many aspects of the X-A5 can be customised to suit your preferences, such as controls, displays and shooting modes.

Fn function button

The camera’s top-plate Fn button can be customised to perform different tasks:

❮ ❯
  • Press and hold the Fn button to show the FUNCTION (Fn) SETTING menu.
  • Scroll down the list of options and press MENU OK to assign a function to the button.

Customising viewscreen information

The information you see when you compose a scene can be changed so only the data you need is shown:

❮ ❯
  • Press MENU OK, then scroll down to the SET-UP menu tab. Press MENU OK.
  • Choose SCREEN SET-UP and scroll down to DISP. CUSTOM SETTING. Press MENU OK.
  • Choose the items you’d like to see on the camera’s screen.

Customising the Q Menu

The Q Menu gives you information at a glance and quick access to camera settings. You can also change what’s on the Q Menu screen to suit your way of working:

❮ ❯
  • Hold down the Q button for a couple of seconds; the customisation screen will appear.
  • Choose the menu-item location you want to customise and press MENU OK.
  • Find the function you’d like to appear in this menu location and press MENU OK.
  • Repeat the above steps for each menu location you want to change. Press DISP BACK to finish.

Customising Film Simulation modes

You’ve probably discovered your camera’s Film Simulation modes by now, but did you know you can customise these to your own tastes?

❮ ❯
  • Hit the Q button to display the Q Menu.
  • Adjust highlights, shadows and colour saturation with the H Tone, S Tone and Color options using the sub-command dial.

Focusing modes

Focus point place and size

The size of the active focusing area used by your X-A5 can be changed in size and moved around the frame. In the camera’s Q Menu, choose from Single Point (highly selective), Zone (for erratically moving subjects) and Wide/Tracking (uses the whole frame) using the sub-command dial. To move the active point or zone, or change its size:

❮ ❯
  • Press the AF/Trash function button once.
  • Use the selector buttons to shift the focus point/area up, down, left or right.
  • Rotate the sub-command dial to change the size of the focus point/area.
  • Press MENU OK or half-press the shutter release button to confirm.

Making the most of manual focus

When you’re focusing manually, the X-A5 offers a couple of focusing aids to help you nail critical focus.

❮ ❯
  • Put the camera in M focus mode by tapping the focus mode icon on the camera’s touchscreen (it will say AF-S or AF-C).
  • To select Focus Peaking, where the area in focus is highlighted in a colour of your choice, press MENU OK, navigate to the fourth page of the shooting menu and choose MF ASSIST. Then, pick FOCUS PEAKING and select a colour (only available in P, A, S and M shooting modes).
  • To switch on Focus Check (where a central portion of the scene is magnified when you begin to focus manually), press MENU OK and scroll to the first page of the SET-UP menu. Choose SCREEN SET-UP and select FOCUS CHECK.

Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens focus barrel – no change of focus mode necessary.

Super selfies

You can shoot great quality selfies with your X-A5, and the camera’s Portrait Enhancer and Face Detection AF features will ensure you always look your best.

❮ ❯
  • Pull out the camera’s touchscreen slightly and flip it up 180 degrees. You’ll notice the image is rotated and flipped, to help you compose more intuitively.
  • Tilting up the LCD screen in this way automatically turns on Face Detection AF and sets Eye Detection AF to Auto.
  • You can use all of the camera’s shooting modes when shooting selfies, but try the Portrait Enhancer mode – it smooths skin textures and ensures you look your best.

Did you know that, when the X-A5 is in Selfie mode, you can depress its sub-command dial to take a picture as if it were a shutter release? And when a power zoom lens is attached, you can rotate the sub-command dial to change focal length.

Shooting video

Picking the right settings

The first thing to decide is which resolution and frame rate settings to use. You’ll find these options in the SHOOTING MENU > MOVIE SET-UP > MOVIE MODE menu.

❮ ❯
  • 4K 2160/15P gives the best resolution and clarity on the X-A5.
  • Full HD 1080 options still provide a good level of resolution, but at higher frame rates, which help capture movement more fluidly.
  • HD 720 options offer less resolution, but files are smaller so you can fit more footage on your memory card.
  • When it comes to frame rate, 24p is fine for most normal applications. Footage shot at frame rates of 59.94p or 50p captures motion more smoothly.

High-speed shooting with 4K video

The resolution of 4K video is large enough to generate still frames that can be used as 8-megapixel images and the X-A5’s 4K Burst mode makes this easy to do.

❮ ❯
  • Press the Drive button and select 4K Burst from the on-screen menu.
  • Shoot normally by pressing the shutter release button.
  • When playing back the images, you can access frames within a burst by pressing the down button and save them out as separate JPEGs by hitting Q.

4K Multifocus mode

Sometimes, when focusing on close-up objects for instance, it’s not possible to achieve enough depth-of-field in a single frame to get everything in focus. In this situation, 4K Multifocus mode is handy. The X-A5 captures 4K video footage while moving through its focus range, then merges the results together to give a single image that’s sharp from back to front.

❮ ❯
  • Press the Drive button and select MULTI FOCUS MODE from the on-screen menu.
  • Shoot normally by pressing the shutter release button.
  • After a short wait, the result is shown on the camera’s screen.

Connecting to your smart device

Your X-A5 can communicate wirelessly with your smartphone or tablet computer via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, so you can transfer pictures to your device where they can be edited and shared with friends and followers online. You can also use your smart device to shoot remotely, controlling the camera and even looking at what the camera sees with remote live view.

Linking to the camera for the first time

❮ ❯
  • Install the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote app on your iOS or Android device.
  • Turn on the camera, press MENU OK and navigate to the SET-UP menu. Choose CONNECTION SETTING > Bluetooth SETTINGS > PAIRING REGISTRATION. The camera will begin searching for your device.
  • In the FUJIFILM Camera Remote app, tap PAIRING REGISTRATION. You’ll see the camera’s name on your smart device – tap this to complete the pairing process.

Transferring images to your device

❮ ❯
  • Press the PLAY button, then press the Fn button on top of the camera
  • Scroll through your images, pressing MENU OK to tag any for transfer.
  • When you’ve finished, hit DISP BACK. Image transfer should begin.

If your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi network, the app may ask to switch to the camera’s own Wi-Fi before transfer can begin.

Remote shooting and control

❮ ❯
  • Launch the Camera Remote app from your smart device and tap the camera name to connect.
  • Tap the Live view shooting option to begin controlling the X-A5.

If your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi network, the app may ask to switch to the camera’s own Wi-Fi before remote shooting can begin.
