An Introduction to the FUJIFILM X Series

The FUJIFILM X Series APS-C mirrorless digital camera system is loved by photographers around the world – from complete beginners, right through to discerning professionals. Here, we take a closer look at what makes it unique amongst its peers

Aside from the fact that the X Series packs advanced imaging technology into some of the most lightweight and portable camera bodies, there are many features you just won’t get anywhere else. This is why X Series has such a loyal following – and why more and more photographers are making the switch.

1. Versatility

The X Series is an enormously versatile family of cameras, so whatever your genre or skill level, there is an option for you.

For example, are you an everyday snapper? Check out the X100V or X-E4 for outstanding portability. Maybe you’re a content creator, vlogger, or just getting started in video? Then the X-S10 with its 4K footage and vari-angle touchscreen is ideal.

If you’re a street or documentary photographer who is all about the process rather than the results, the X-Pro3 is the perfect choice. Rangefinder styling reduces bulk, a hidden touchscreen minimises distractions, and an Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder allows you to switch between EVF and OVF in an instant.

And for those who need just one tool to make professional-level photos and videos with no sacrifice in quality, look no further than the X-T4 – the ultimate hybrid camera.

When you also consider the enormous selection of XF prime and zoom lenses, covering a focal range of 8-800mm (12-1218mm equivalent) and catering for all budgets, there’s very little you can’t do with the X Series.

2. Ergonomic controls

One of the most celebrated aspects of X Series cameras and lenses is their unique and highly intuitive external controls. While some cameras in the range feature the standard PASM function dial, many adopt a different approach instead.

On the top plate of the X-T and X-Pro series cameras, for example, there are separate controls for shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation – and the majority of XF lenses include an aperture ring. Other analogue controls enable quick selection of drive, focus and metering modes.

Having such convenient access to essential settings means it couldn’t be easier to make changes on the fly. Plus, by avoiding the need to look at on-screen menu systems, you can do it when your camera is switched off, saving precious battery power.

These uniquely ergonomic controls have proved extremely popular with photographers from all backgrounds. Newcomers to photography tell us that having everything laid out in front of them makes the learning process easier, while those more experienced love the way it harks back to film cameras of the past. However, the one thing they all say is how much more connected they feel to not only their camera, but also their art.

3. Film Simulation

Sure, the renowned X-Trans CMOS sensors that sit at the heart of each X Series camera are capable of creating images of remarkable quality – but there’s more to it than that.

For over 85 years, Fujifilm has been responsible for producing some of the most celebrated analogue film ever. In fact, it’s highly likely that at least one of your favourite movies was made using FUJIFILM photographic film. This wealth of experience in colour science has been poured into every X Series camera, ensuring they reproduce vibrant colours and accurate tones, allowing you to preserve the essence of any moment.

What’s more, Fujifilm has immortalised their legendary analogue films in a collection of exclusive Film Simulation modes. These digital emulations come pre-loaded on your camera and work in the same way as a digital filter. Select your favourite and it will give your images a truly unique ‘look’ straight out of camera – no post-production or Instagram filters required!
