X-T30 Tech Focus: Stills Photography

The FUJIFILM X-T30 offers stills photographers of all disciplines and skill levels the perfect tool for releasing their creativity, but how is this achieved?

Let’s take a closer look at the cutting-edge technology that is packed into the X-T30’s slim body and explore how it produces outstanding stills photography.

X-Trans CMOS 4 Sensor

At the very heart of the X-T30 is the X-Trans CMOS 4 imaging sensor. This is the fourth generation of Fujifilm’s unique CMOS sensor and it doesn’t disappoint. At 26.1 megapixels, it offers the highest resolution of any APS-C sensor, providing professional imaging results for both photographers and filmmakers.

As with all X-Trans CMOS sensors, the CMOS 4 uses a unique color filter array to reduce moiré and false color without the need for an optical low-pass filter.

This sensor also benefits from a back-illuminated structure. Traditional front-illuminated sensors include the photo receptive layer at the base, with the electronics placed over the top leaving a gap over each individual pixel to let the light through. As the resolution of sensors has risen, the size of pixels has fallen which, in turn has reduced the size of the gaps and therefore the amount of light that is let in. The X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor changes all this by placing the electronics at the base of the sensor allowing the maximum amount of valuable light to reach each pixel.

This new structure provides maximum quality and minimum noise, while the sensor, with a new low-native ISO setting of 160, can deliver beautiful images even in challenging lighting conditions.

X-Processor 4 Quad Core CPU

We know the X-T30 has a great heart, now let’s look at its head – the X-Processor 4. With each generation this exceptional imaging processor has upped its game, continuously pushing the boundaries to provide the fastest and most efficient user experience.

The X-Processor 4 quad-core CPU features a new algorithm, which significantly improves focus tracking efficiency over its predecessor. Other improvements include faster autofocus (AF) and enhanced Film Simulation modes, which all come together to make the next generation of X-Processor the most powerful yet.

100% Phase Detection AF

Upon release, the X-T30’s AF performance is a significant upgrade from the X-T20 due to the new algorithm mentioned above, but also to the fact that there are 2.16 million phase detection pixels, expanding the on-sensor phase detection AF area to 100% of the frame.

Low-light AF performance has also been improved significantly on previous models with phase detection expanded from +0.5EV to -3EV. This allows fast and accurate AF, even in poorly lit shooting situations.

Improved Face & Eye Detection

The same new algorithm has brought with it even more accurate face and eye detection. The X-T30’s Face Detection function now operates at double the speed of previous models, while the Eye Detection feature works in AF-C mode, improving results with moving subjects. The camera also includes a Face Select function, which enables users to prioritize the focus for one particular face in a group.

Intuitive Controls

Even though the technology inside the X-T30 is highly advanced, the controls are quite the opposite. Its 3-inch 1.04 million dot 2-way tilting capacitive touchscreen provides responsive touch commands that can be used during shooting. These intuitive controls include Touch AF, Touch Focus Area Selection, Touch Shot and also allow images to be scrolled with a simple swipe motion when reviewing.

This is only improved by the inclusion of an analog Focus Lever, which not only provides simpler operability, but also enhances grip on the back of the camera to ensure the utmost handheld stability.

On The Road with the X-T30

To celebrate the launch of the X-T30, Fujifilm is sending this versatile camera on a journey around the USA and beyond in the hands of some of the greatest photographers in the world. The journey will not only be geographical, but also a philosophical exploration of the reasons why we take photographs, asking each photographer what legacy means to them and how they are using FUJIFILM cameras to create theirs.
