Matías Costa (Spain)

Matías Costa, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1973, lives in Spain. His work explores the notions of territory, memory and identity through a fine-art approach to the traditional storytelling photography.

His award-winning career includes twice World Press Photo, the Discovery Prize at the first PhotoEspaña edition and the Honorable Mention at RM Photobook award. He won as well the Leica Prize at the Images Festival in Vevey, Switzerland, and the grants from the Fondation Lagardère and Fotopres-Fundación La Caixa.

His work has been widely shown at venues all around the world, being part of the permanent collections of the Museo de América in Madrid, Hubei Museum of Art in China, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Panama, and private collections.

He has published the books Zonians (La Fábrica, 2015), Photobolsillo (La Fábrica, 2011 and reprint in 2014) and The Family Project (Lens, 2012).

He is also a professor of Contemporary Documentary Photography at the University School TAI-Rey Juan Carlos and at the EFTI and LENS schools of Madrid.

Recently he has been granted with a Leonardo Program for researchers and cultural creators, of the BBVA Foundation, to accomplish his project on The old Europe.

In 2020 he will have his first retrospective at the art center Sala Canal de Isabel II, of the Community of Madrid.
