X-T30 Tech Focus: Videography

The FUJIFILM X-T30 is making a name for itself as an extremely capable all-round creative tool, not least because of its professional video capabilities.

The reason why this camera is proving popular with videographers across the USA is that it includes very advanced technology within a highly portable, lightweight body. In this article, we delve a little deeper to explore the technology that makes it all possible.

X-Trans CMOS 4 Sensor and X-Processor 4 Combination

At the center of it all is a great combination for videography: the X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4 quad-core CPU. These two highly advanced pieces of imaging technology work hand-in-hand to provide not only outstanding image quality, but a smooth, and fast user experience.

The back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor heralds the fourth generation in Fujifilm’s revolutionary CMOS family and thrusts the X-T30 to the forefront of ever-advancing mirrorless camera technology. Offering 26.1 megapixels, it is the highest resolution APS-C sensor currently available and uses a unique color filter array to reduce moiré and false color without the need for an optical low-pass filter.

It’s all very well having great high-quality image reproduction technology, but this would be nothing without an extremely efficient image processing engine to ensure fast, stable and trustworthy operation. That’s where the X-Processor 4 steps in. This quad-core CPU is the fourth incarnation of this outstanding processor and provides astonishing power for its small size.

This combination of technologies ensures that the X-T30 delivers in even the most challenging lighting conditions.

4K Video Recording

With such a powerful combination at its core, the X-T30 records 4K/30p video with ease. Down-sampling the X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor’s 6K output is effortless work for the quad-core processor, which results in smooth, reliable, and continuous capture for up to 10 minutes at a time.

The movie industry standard 4K DCI is also supported, offering an even wider 17:9 aspect ratio that gives an unrivaled cinematic feel to your video.

Super Slow Motion

The X-T30 is also capable of recording Full HD 1080p footage at 120fps. This enables super slow motion playback, while preserving excellent detail. It’s perfect for anything, from a baby’s first steps to high-octane action sports.

Face and Eye Tracking

By using the X-T30’s high-resolution tilting touchscreen or its intuitive analog Focus Lever control, it is possible to select and track the faces and eyes of moving subjects during filming, ensuring the subject of your video always remains in sharp focus. This is achieved thanks to a newly developed AF algorithm combined with 2.16 million phase detection pixels that cover 100% of the frame. Such functionality further cements this camera’s versatility and appeal to a broad range of genres and skill levels.

Spectacular Color Reproduction

Whether you’re after great footage straight out of the camera or maximum freedom to edit in post-production, the X-T30 truly delivers.

This new camera offers the opportunity to record footage in Fujifilm’s famed Film Simulation modes. There are 16 different options to choose from that can add sensational atmosphere to your footage, from the monochrome ACROS to the newest addition, ETERNA. This mode simulates the classic ETERNA 500 motion picture film, providing understated color and rich shadow tones.

For those that want maximum creative freedom, the X-T30 offers the option shoot in F-Log, which offers a much wider dynamic range. Once edited, F-Log footage can deliver better detail and color reproduction than standard video capture.

Furthermore, in order to offer the utmost room to edit, videographers can also record at 10-bit, 4:2:2 color by outputting directly to the X-T30’s HDMI port and using an external recorder. This offers 1,024 levels per color channel and up to 1.07 billion colors in total, making for professional-quality footage that wouldn’t look out of place on the big screen.

Small, Lightweight Design

It’s hard to believe that so much cutting-edge technology can be crammed into the X-T30’s slim body. This doesn’t mean that portability equals less control. With the introduction of a Focus Lever control to replace the X-T20’s direction pad, there is plenty of space on the back of the camera body to ensure a steady handheld grip.

With overall dimensions of 118.4mm (W) x 82.8mm (H) x 46.8mm (D) / 4.66in (W) x 3.26in (H) x 1.84in (D), and an approximate weight of just 383g/13.5oz including battery and SD memory card, this camera is a dream to carry whether you’re on holiday or on location.
