BIOGRAPHY

Adam Ferguson (b.1978) grew up in regional Australia before studying photography at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. After graduating Ferguson worked as a sailor, travelling through the Caribbean, Central America and The Mediterranean to fund the beginning of his career. He interned with VII Photo Agency Paris in 2006 and then moved to Asia in 2007, embarking on an in-depth project documenting the war in Afghanistan.

Ferguson has focused on political tensions and critical social issues throughout the world, working in Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan, Australia, Palestine, Israel, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Kenya and Egypt, amongst others. He has received numerous honors for his work, including being selected in the Photo District News 30 Emerging Photographers to Watch 2009 and World Press Photo Masterclass in 2010. In the years since he has been awarded again by Photo District News and World Press Photo, as well as by Pictures of the Year International, The Australian National Portrait Gallery, Reportage Festival and The European Publishers Award for Photography.

Ferguson’s photographs have been published by Time Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, Wired, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, ESPN Magazine, The Financial Times Magazine, The Independent, Bloomberg Businessweek and Human Rights Watch, amongst many more. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Reportage Festival Sydney, The Annenberg Space for Photography Los Angeles, The National Portrait Gallery Australia and World Press Photo.

He is currently based in Sydney, Australia where he is working on two monographs; one a war diary exploring his time in Afghanistan and the other a critique of contemporary Australian identity.

COMMENT

The most engaging images come from a space where the subject and photographer move past a superficial posed interaction. The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 is small, quiet and unassuming, enabling the camera to become a secondary presence while working.
