We take a look at what FUJIFILM X-T4 has brought to moviemaking and how it has inspired photographers into action

As the art of image making evolves in a world ruled by digital content, the lines have started to blur between photographers and videographers. This, in turn, has sparked the emergence of a new breed of photographer who works in both disciplines, and these artists demand a new breed of tool, one that removes the need to sacrifice stills photography capabilities in favor of video – and vice versa. This new tool is FUJIFILM X-T4.

When Fujifilm began designing X-T4, it wanted to create a camera that excelled in both mediums. The result is a tool that can go all the way from a movie set to an arctic expedition, capturing stunning, professional-quality photos and videos along the way.

Such a capable camera has changed the way many artists create. With so much moviemaking power inside such a compact, lightweight body, and outstanding still photography capabilities to boot, X-T4 has made professional-level moviemaking much more accessible, opening up a whole new world of possibilities.

We speak to some of the most talented creators in the US to find out what this revolutionary camera has brought to moviemaking and, conversely, how it has brought moviemaking to photographers as a new form of expression.

“X-T4 is a great camera for many people – and when I say many people, I mean it. It’s affordable, but doesn’t lack quality of build or features. I can strap it around my neck, hike around the mountains of Oregon for a week and get the camera covered in rain, and the next week I can assemble it in a cage with cinema lenses, matte box, and the whole nine yards.

“The 10-bit internal recording is a game changer. Having a camera this small that shoots such a wide color gamut and Log is just amazing. I can be discreet when I need to, I can capture great dynamic range, and have the flexibility in post for great grading results without terrible color banding etc. If you want 10-bit, you’re looking at much more expensive cameras or ones that lack many of the great features X-T4 has.

“All in all, this camera is an extremely versatile addition to my setup. I can lighten the load with an A and B cam for productions. I can keep the size of the camera small or large and have it ready for whatever type of shot we need at a moment’s notice. I can film YouTube content with it one day using the vari-angle LCD to see myself, and the next day I can use it for production. If I’m headed on a trip, I can take it as an amazing stills camera, and with 50% more battery life than the X-T3, I can travel lighter and take pictures wherever I go.”

“X-T4’s 240fps high-speed shooting mode is absolutely jaw dropping and begs to be played with. As I am primarily a stills shooter, there haven’t been many cameras that convince me to start playing with video, but this one has. I now have the unique ability to capture and play back time in a quality I’ve never seen before, and my creative brain is just teeming with ideas to play with this feature.

“The IBIS is also a great addition. When I am shooting video, I don’t want to have to think about things like gimbals or glidecams. I want to be able to handhold without extra effort, and the IBIS certainly allows for that.

“I have been able to step outside my comfort zone as a photographer and create videos I never thought I would be capable of creating myself”

“I would recommend X-T4 to anyone that is dabbling in video work. The video specs and IBIS make it an absolutely worthwhile purchase. I have been able to step outside my comfort zone as a photographer and create videos I never thought I would be capable of creating myself. I’m truly excited to add this into my creative toolbox.”

“It used to be that shooting video was quite inaccessible to most people. With cameras like X-T4, the limiting factors to the quality of the video work have nothing to do with the camera’s capabilities, which really frees up the creator to do so many amazing things.

“So many things about this camera make it amazing. The quality of the files is insanely good, and we have much more latitude with coloring later on. The resolution and frame rate specs give us tons of flexibility as well. Also, adding IBIS to the X-T series is massive for us. We can easily get shots completely handheld without any additional gear.

“X-T4 is a great camera system for hybrid creatives, because it allows you to switch between high-quality photography and video in seconds. The battery life is strong, and the In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) allows you to create smooth handheld shots that have the same look and feel of a gimbal. The vari-angle LCD touchscreen can also be tilted through 180°, which lends itself well to several ‘look-up’ style shots I recently captured for a film.

“X-T4 is compact, sleek, and extremely powerful and the 240fps video capability is a game changer. Having the ability to capture moments at such a high speed really opens up more possibilities. Overall, the compact size and sleek design of X-T4 makes it my favorite FUJIFILM system so far.”

“To assume that photo and video don’t affect each other is so naive. The reality these days is that we are being hammered daily, moment to moment, by advertising. Content creation has overtaken so much of the art that used to exist in our industry and learning to not isolate yourself artistically is something that can really set us all apart.

“Ultimately, learning video, being around it, and exposure to it, whether I personally do it or simply have a team of videographers alongside me, has done nothing but open me up creatively to a different understanding of light and story.

“X-T4 is the new standard for a run and gun. The IBIS blew my team away. Being able to handhold this tiny camera and pull focus while moving is something that was an instant attraction. I’m sure some people will really mod out this camera with a cage and a cinema kit, and I know that it can hang quality-wise no problem. It wouldn’t surprise me to see X-T4 on large-scale production sets. However, I think it best fits in hand just the way it was designed.

“It’s small, light, maneuverable, and so capable as an event camera for everything, from concerts to small commercial projects. I think this camera will be a staple for years to come in the video industry.”
